Muscular Dystrophy Awareness
Muscular dystrophy is probably one of the worst things that could happen to anybody and it is definitely one of the harshest illnesses that can be contracted.
Muscular dystrophy is incurable and while there has been much research put in the illness, scientist is still not 100% sure why certain people contract the illness and how to stop it.
What is muscle dystrophy?
Muscle dystrophy is a sickness which is marked by the progressive weakening of the muscular system in the body. Muscles will start to break down and eventually, the body will spiral out of control, meaning that you will have no control over the muscles. People with this illness usually end up in wheelchairs.
Muscular dystrophy usually surfaces in the childhood of an individual, but since there are many forms of this disease, some of the symptoms might only surface when a person enters early adulthood.
The most common way scientists speculate the disease is contracted is from inheriting the disease in a family where the disease is present, but boys are targeted by the disease more often than women and they can lose muscles capabilities in the legs by the age of 12.
Since there is no cure for the disease, the only way the patient can extend their life is by taking medication, which will help suppress the weakening of the muscle tissues. Steroids are usually given to help muscles maintain their strength for the time being and to reduce the deterioration of the muscles at a rapid speed.
When the skeletal muscles around the lungs and throat are attacked by the disease, individuals might need to have support added to help them breathe and eventually this will turn into life support.
Finally, it is worth noting that the disease might not be the same in all patients and there are a few individuals who manage to live with the disease over the course of a normal lifespan.
With a few medications and regular check-ups, the disease can be controlled to an extent and will allow the individual to have an extended lifetime.
